Karamu House

Description:

Karamu House began as a settlement house in 1915, in Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded on the principle that people from different races, religions, and economic backgrounds could meet, learn and work together through the arts. Karamu House Theatre is recognized as the oldest, producing African American theatre in the nation. Initially called The Neighborhood Association and incorporated under that name in 1920, it was commonly referred to as The Playhouse Settlement. A theater building was added to the settlement in 1927 and named Karamu from the Swahili for a place of joyful gathering. The Neighborhood Association changed its name to Karamu in 1941.

Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland

Collection contains the website for the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (MOCA). MOCA was founded to showcase contemporary art and introduce it to Clevelanders. It was founded in 1968 as the New Gallery. It became a non-profit in 1974 and changed its name to Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art in 1984. In 2002, the organization’s name was changed to Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland.

SPACES

Registered as a non-profit educational organization named Aeolus in 1978, SPACES (renamed in 1979) was conceived by founder James Rosenberger as a place explore alternative approaches to art activity. SPACES commissions artists from around the world, at all stages of their careers, to make new work that is responsive to timely issues. Additionally, Spaces creates educational initiatives that help develop a more informed citizenry, and distributes grants to artists outside of our residency and exhibition programs.
